5 Keys to Protecting Your New Device

About to get that new smartphone or tablet? Then you’re probably super excited, I mean who doesn’t love shiny new technology? You live in a world that’s all about staying connected – to everyone and everything that’s most important to you – whether you’re home, at work, or out and about. With that in mind, wouldn’t it be a good idea to stop for a minute and put some thought into how you’re going to protect that awesome new smartphone or tablet (and all that information you’re going to be keeping on it)?
Here’s a short list of things that might be worth considering before you walk out of the store with your new device:

1. Cases and screen protectors are just the first line of defense

We take our devices everywhere – so it’s almost inevitable that they’ll eventually slip out of our hands or take an unintended dip. Although most devices come with a manufacturer’s warranty, this won’t help you since cosmetic, accidental and liquid damages are often not covered. Cases and screen protectors are a great first line of defense against everyday scuffs, nicks, and scratches. Plus, if you keep your device in great shape, you can probably get top dollar when you decide to trade it in or sell it when you want the newer model. Cases and protectors are available in a variety of styles to fit both your budget and personality – so don’t go too far without getting one!…Remember the guy that bought the first iPhone6® and dropped it right outside the store?

2. Even the best case won’t prevent your device from getting lost or stolen

Ever had that heart-pounding moment when you thought you lost your phone? Or even worse – when you realized you really did lose it? Phones are often left behind in taxis, stores, restrooms – just about anywhere you can imagine. And what about the ones that mysteriously disappear out of a pocket or a backpack? The thought of having to buy another phone is bad enough, but did you know that if you financed your device you would be responsible for the remaining installments even if your device is damaged, lost, or stolen? Ugh! So while a case might be a first line of defense, you may want to consider a protection program.

3. All protection programs are not created equal

Protection programs can bring peace of mind – just make sure you understand what you’re really getting and ask the right questions when considering protection. For example, don’t assume that you’re covered for loss, theft and/or liquid damage. Many programs only cover accidental damage or mechanical breakdown and that’s something you don’t want to find out when it’s time to file a claim! Check the deductibles, claim limits, whether your device will be repaired or replaced, and how long it will take to get back up and running again. And don’t wait too long! Many times you can only enroll in protection programs within a certain number of days from the time you buy or activate your phone – you don’t want to wait until something happens to think about coverage…by then, it may be too late! For instance, our Device Protection+ plans are available for the first 30 days after you activate your new device.

4. The data in your device shouldn't take a back seat

Your phone is not just for talking. It’s your camera, mailbox, shopping mall, wallet, bank, social network, remote control, address book, calendar, and so much more … The last thing you need is to lose all that valuable information or even worse, have it end up in the wrong hands! So if you’re seriously considering getting coverage for your device, some programs out there have really stepped up their game and offer ways to protect, back up and restore your data, find your phone, and even remotely lock your phone or delete all your personal information. Anti-virus/anti-malware programs should also be considered to help ensure that would-be hackers stay at arm’s length from your personal information. With these great benefits, you’ll definitely be on the right track to ensure your data isn’t taking a back seat when it comes to protection.

5. Get full coverage for 40 cents or less a day

Our devices do more today than ever before but all that new technology isn’t always easy to manage. It always helps to know you have tools and support to keep your device running at its best. Some protection programs even offer special support options, like apps, that can help you troubleshoot little problems before they become major headaches.

Important stuff to think about, right? A comprehensive program like Device Protection+ from U.S. Cellular focuses on what matters most to customers like you – protecting your device, securing your data and keeping you connected and worry-free for 40 cents or less a day. So, before you walk out of the store with your new device, make sure you give some serious thought to how you can protect the most important link to your connected world.
